can any1 clariffy?

i mean a band 5, JUST a band 5 in standard english according to SAM is the top 2.4%. Should i be taking into acount the canditure, seeing as though for many its a compulsary ( dnt really give a crap). I mean still 2.4% is harsh for only 80 + seeing as it gets scaled to 34.7/50

You would be correct...

A good reason behind that is because most English Standard students are quite incompetent at English. It is not marked too harshly. I myself got a high band 5 considering I completely screwed Paper 1 (close to fail) but pwned Paper 2. I could have got band 6 if I didn't do so badly in Paper 1....

The standards expected for a band 5 in English Standard are similar to the standards expected for band 5 in English Advanced. The Area of Study is responsible for that, since generally Advanced students overtake Standard students in Paper 1 (this is where most Standard students lose marks in).
