There are 52 cards in a normal deck of cards.
There are 4 equal suits of 13 cards each, clubs, spades, diamonds and hearts.
There are 26 black cards, the clubs and spade suits, and 26 red cards, the diamonds and hearts suits.
There are 4 of each of the cards about to be named, one for each suit, Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King.
Get yourself a deck of cards and see what is in there.

a bit more uncommon knowledge about these playing cards. im sorry if this is inappropriate in a maths forum.

52 cards --> no. of weeks in a year
4 suits --> the number of seasons
if u arrange A --> K in order, u will notice that the middle card is the 7 --> the number of days in a week.
count all the pips --> you will get 365 --> no. of days in a year.
13 in each suit --> 13 is considered the 'unlucky' number.

go figure! :)

the actual suit shapes that appear on the card. take the 3 of clubs for example. we have 3 'larger' clubs and the 2 smaller clubs that form the index. those 'clubs' are the pips. so on the 3 of clubs, there are 5 pips.

another example: queen of diamonds: has 4 diamonds on it --> 4 pips

etc etc

one more thing: i dont think any card questions will appear in the HSC exams, because of political correctness reasons. some people's customs and beliefs prohibit gambling, and playing cards are considered to be part of gambling. so, i dont think u will be expected to see any coin tosses, horse racing, playing cards, roulette tables, poker, etc...in the HSC. this goes for all lvls of HSC maths.

just as a quick note. i always used to assume jokers were part of the 52 deck of cards. And usually(im probably wrong) there are 2 jokers. So i always thought there were 50 proper cards.

Lesson to be learnt: there are 52 cards in a deck, jokers dont count
