Hi there,

I've entered some numbers into the Matrix UMAX calculator (for 99.9 ATAR...purely hypothetically, I assure you :p) and its told me what I need to get in my subjects to achieve a certain ATAR.

English X1: HSC Mark -- 96.7 (halved because it's a 1-unit subject i presume) which is a Percentile of 97.0
English X2: HSC Mark -- 98.1 (again, halved) which is a Percentile of 94.4

What I'd like to know is if a "Percentile" of 97, for example, means that I have to beat ~97% of candidates that do EE1...that is, come in the top 3%.

Just need some people to confirm the above. Thanks!

You're pretty much on the money there. For 98th percentile you need to beat 98% of the state, i.e. come in the top 2%.

Cool, thanks to both of you :D. I have another quick question...

I'm equally good at Math and English. I enjoy both equally. Which will be harder to achieve?

These marks for these 4 units:
MX1 -- HSC mark of 95.1 --> percentile of 87.7
MX2 -- 90.7 --> 72.2

Or, these marks for these 4 units:
2U Math -- 97.3 --> 97.4
EE1 -- 96.7 --> 97.0
EE2 -- 98.1 --> 94.4

Bear in mind that my school is one of the top in the state at Math, but so-so in English (HSC results-wise).

Purely hypothetically, of course.

The latter definitely. 3/4 Maths is very easy to achieve high marks in due to the low percentiles required. Fairly sure if you're aiming a ~97 in 2U that you'd be able to get 95 in 3U/4U easily.

Thanks again. Haha, I'm not exactly "aiming" for these marks, I'm just saying what the ATAR calculator tells me!

The mark for MX2 is (generally) clumped around 92, and that's pretty much the average, so it's not as hard to get as 96 in English Adv. I would say, especially upon you mentioning your school's maths performance.
