It's to test for metallic ions, which are mostly cations. Can't think of any metallic anions..danz90 said:

Yeah, all of the above. Mostly, it tests for ppm because most cations are in ppm concentrations. So when it gives you data, most of the time it's ppm. However, it can measure to ppb as people said
