Abbott suggests corporal punishment return

Friday Jun 15 08:35 AEST

Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott has suggested a return to corporal punishment to ensure discipline returns to schools.

The comments came after Mr Abbott watched footage of a vicious attack on a Melbourne schoolgirl.
The grainy vision from a mobile phone showed a teenage girl repeatedly kicked in the head and body by two other teenagers.

Mr Abbott was alarmed by the footage and said it showed that current methods of discipline in schools were not working.

"I mean, we've taken corporal punishment out of the schools because we think that's brutal and yet our playgrounds seem to be becoming more brutal than ever," the minister told the Nine Network.

"Maybe a little bit more discipline in the schools would prevent some of the ugliness that we've just seen."

Mr Abbott said it was a different situation in his day.

"When I was a kid at school, if you got up to mischief you were punished, not severely, but never-the-less you were punished." Victoria Police have cautioned two teenage girls over the assault which took place last year in Melbourne's western suburbs.

Ahhh yes.

Remember those good old days?

Back in the good old-days, WE GOT A CANING IN SCHOOL IF WE MISBEHAVED. He wants us to return to this old fashioned conservative school system where students are caned. He's certainly on my side. The whole Liberal party is. Even though Tony Abbot doesn't actually have the power to reintroduce corporal punishment because the law of Assault is a state law, JUST VOTE.. OK? VOTE FOR THE LIBERALS. The fact that he is suggesting it, just.. *IMPLIES* that he's on our side. And, he's a liberal, .. THEREFORE, ALL LIBERALS ARE CONSERVATIVE AND OMFG *ORGASM* I'M VOTING LIBERAL.

That's all that's needed really. The fact that it's never going to be reintroduced is besides the point. He simply needs to say that he *believes* it should be introduced, to get my vote, because his statements reflect that the Liberals are a truly conservative party.. and, i'm proud to be conservative, a fighter against the revolutionary army of political correctness.

He's on our side.

The reason i'm voting for the liberals is because they certainly are more inline with what my disgruntled uneducated marginalized arse believes, than those communists in the Labor party!

What's the problem with kids these days anyway?

Back in my day, kids never misbehaved.

And, you know.. If they did misbehave, they got a caning, so they grew up to be model citizens.. EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

Not one single person over the age of 25 is bad. Australian society is civil today as a consequence of getting a good arse whipping back in the day. Caning puts kids back in line, you know?

We don't have room for any of this politically correct non-caning stuff that applies in schools these days. There's just no room for it. NO ROOM. It's just... political correctness gone mad, you know?

VOTE [1] LIBERAL.

I'll conclude by saying :care:
Nah i'm heaps conservative. Which is why i vote liberal. You know, thank god we have conservative john howard and his ministers in charge who want to put illegal immigrants in detention centers, and .. re-introduce corporal punishment and stuff!

He's my friend, I'M VOTING FOR HIM AND DON'T TRY TO STOP ME.

There's a saying among journalists that news is anything someone doesn't want you to know. So let me tell you all about John Howard's immigration program. It's a key part of the Government's economic policy, but one it rarely talks about.

Why? Because Howard wants his Battlers to think he shares their dislike and distrust of foreigners, especially boat people. And it wouldn't help his image for people to know he's running the biggest immigration program we've ever had.

The fact is, however, that immigration is playing a big part in keeping the economy growing strongly, preventing shortages of skilled labour from causing a wages blowout, keeping inflation under control, limiting the rise in interest rates and keeping house prices rising rather than falling.

When Howard was elected in 1996 he cut the planned immigrant intake to 68,000, but by last financial year he'd more than doubled it. His planned intake for next financial year is almost 153,000 - plus 13,000 under the humanitarian program. To that you can add about 24,000 New Zealanders - who don't need visas and will be arriving to join the 470,000 of their fellow countrypersons who are here.

Last calendar year was the eighth straight year of net immigration (that is, net of permanent departures) in excess of 100,000.

Actually, thanks to a burst of high migration in the late 1980s, net immigration has exceeded 100,000 a year in 12 of the past 20 years, having exceeded 100,000 only 12 times in the previous two centuries.

Another way to put it is that the program is running at a lot more than a million immigrants a decade.
SEE!!?!!!?

HE'S CONSERVATIVE!

We need to be conservative.. to feel safe in a society being infiltrated by communist Islamic terrorists. He's fighting in Iraq against the terroriztzzz.

Thank god we have a conservative politician who always blows dog whistles.

So, if not conservative, what would you call them?

We can ignore the immigrant numbers because that's just your deep seated racism and white supremacy being projected onto others, ie. all conservatives are racists and must be against immigration :D

No they ARE conservative Captain Gh3y, and don't you dare say otherwise.

Just because not all conservatives are strict with immigration, doesn't mean that the liberals don't stand to further our other conservative interests? RIGHT CAPTAIN GH3Y?

I full support it.
Kids are so mentally weak these days. A good beating promotes character and conformity.
When you take away the threat of physical force from a teacher, you effectively rob them of all clout and authority. In fact, I would happily link the end of teaching the rod with the rotting of society.

It's definately worth looking into. The problem with society today is its overemphasis on individual 'rights'. The soft approach to educating youngsters merely promotes the importance of individual 'rights' in future generations. In reality, rights isn't the operative word, individual is. Most of them won't grow up to be defenders of human rights but as selfish, self-centered, greedy brats. Contrary to liberal ideals, society doesn't work because people go out to pursue their own interests. It works by the existence of hierarchy, discipline, and altruism seen as obligatory duty.

I don't agree with Abbott on many things, but this is the part of conservative ideology that holds true in my opinion. Kids need to be inculcated to obey and listen to superiors, particular where it is for their own good (as is the case with teachers).

Absolutely. It's a well-meaning idea to find other means of discipline, but it's been totally mutated.
And I think that the selfishness extends to parents as well. They dont want to deal with that. Theyre too weak to teach the rod and spare the child. Much easier to get the drugs.

On this point, saw Pirates3 yesterday, and the overall message was appauling. It reflects this idea that government and authority always have ulterior, dubious motives, and can never be trusted to act in our interests. However the solution isnt to reform, but to "take what you can", and treat everything in life as a potential means to your own ends. There's no obligation to anything but yourself.
This is how Rome fell

He's trying to win over all the ignorant old-aged pensioners. They associate with the old bag and vote for him. As if he gives a fuck about Australian values (Well maybe the White Australia policy.)

You do realise that it only takes one counter-example to invalidate that claim right?

By labelling the act of discipline as abuse, you're not eliminating abuse but only increasing its occurrence by its seaping into mainstream consciousness.

It's really hard to see if anyone posting in this thread is doing so seriously, or tongue-in-cheek.

Corporal punishment in schools would not work in todays enviroment. You'd get kids who got rapped across the knuckles going home and injuring themselves worse and then sueing the school.

However in a home based setting it can be effective, especially for, (and I know this will sound strange) younger kids. When I was a kid, if I wouldn't stop touching everything on the supermarket shelves, and making a nuisance of myself, there were two options. As a reminder, a slap on the knuckles that stung usually did the trick. Or, what always stuck in my mind, and was looked at with dread, was having to hold my mother's hand the whole time...
lol. All this weak bleating about kids being scarred for life and it damaging their fragule self esteems is just so much crap IMO.

WE'RE BEING FULLY SERIOUS. There's no tongue-in-cheek remarks in this thread. We need to be stern and serious in this authoritarian environment, lest we be subjected to CORPORAL PUNISHMENT!

Now pull down your pants and bend over. :burn:

I'm not sure I follow. Either way, corparal punishment isn't discipline, it's abuse. :)
