On application to Medicine at the University of Adelaide, it is a requirement that a performance in the top 10% of the state in the UAI is made.

Is the top 10% all of the students that recieive a UAI above 90.00 ?

because i was reading the uni of newcastle booklet and it said that to be in the top 10%, you must receive a UAI of 93.8 or above.

does anyone know for certain?

90 UAI in the top 10% is definitely not the case, as they scale and adjust the ranks to suit a predetermined distribution.

There would be a lot more angst and general unrest if half the state really got below 50 UAI (think of a parent who sets academic standards for his/her kids)
And since every assessment mark 50 and below is band 1 (band of non-achievers i.e. fail) I think the 93.80 is around the reasonable mark.
They also try to separate the cream from the rest.

u have to remember that the UAI is a rank based on everyone that finished Year 10 in 2000
and also remember not everyone in the state gets a UAI..
of the 60 000 odd Year 12 students doing the HSC, only 49 000 odd recieved a UAI

In 2001: 7,959 students in the state got a UAI of 90.00 or over,
7,510: 80.00 - 89.95
7,021: 70.00 - 79.95
6,418: 60.00 - 69.95
5,689: 50.00 - 59.95
and 15,187 got a UAI below 50.00

the stats say that the majority of the state either get under 50 or get over 90

In both 2000 and 2001, a UAI of 90.00 would have placed you in the top 16% of HSC candidates, and a UAI of 95.00 would have placed you in the top 8% of HSC candidates.

93.80 for the top 10% of the HSC candidature certainly seems to fit.
