Western Sydney, in general, has a bad reputation. If you want a *good* suburb, you're probably looking at living near the city or towards the coast (North Shore).

Sounds like you are not from Sydney.

Most new students to Sydney tend to live reasonably close to Uni and accessible by transport, places like Glebe or Newtown, or say on the inner west rail line. None of these suburbs is any better or worse than each other. Even great suburbs has places with neighbours from hell.

In terms of where to live, it really depends on your budget. Places are a lot cheaper the further out from the city you are, but then you'll be spending time and money on transport to uni.

Apart from Glebe/Newtown, some other suburbs around USyd include Chippendale, Redfern (the side near Usyd isn't too bad, but I personally probably wouldn't live on the other side of the stn), Forest Lodge, even up to Leichardt.
