id just like to know how to print multiple (ie.4) pages in a pdf document onto a single a4 page to save paper

Go to Print, then there is an option that says "Page Scaling" - change it to "Multiple pages per sheet". This is in Acrobat 7.

ta. in my version you have to go to print > properties then page layout. thanks anyway.
