Just thought I'd tell future acst students about these 2 units since I just finished the exams for both
354
- Unit is split into 3 parts. Survival models, Markov, Graduation.
- Survival Models and Markov (chains and jumps) are taught by Xian.
- The exam questions on Survival Models and Markov were virtually the same as the ones seen in tutorials and assignments. They were all about applying the methods you've learnt, i.e. stuff like KME, NAE, likelihood in Cox model, poisson process...
- Graduation is taught by Leonie.
- The exam questions for this part were mostly on explaining stuff. Much like the questions she puts in her parts of the tutorial. There was a question asking which graduation method wouldn't work if we had limited data, and which graduation method would be best for making Australian life tables.
Overall it was a reasonable test with not many surprises.
356
- Taught entirely be Leonie.
- Part A of the exam was 14 true/false, 3MC and a short answer. The true false had a few questions on stuff about ruin theory. MCs were straight forward. The short answer was on simulation.
- Exam questions for part B were ridiculously hard. They were nothing like the questions which were in the tutorials and had quite a few tricks. You'll get to see part B so you can see for yourself.
Overall I found it a very challenging exam (as did many of my friends).
So there you have it. I guess most of this stuff won't make any sense now, but hopefully it'll help in a years time
