Advanced consists of the Area of Study and three Modules. AOS has three sections – short answer, critical response, creative. I did Power for prelim, doing Discovery now. It's pretty broad, so you have a lot of scope to explore within the given concept. Modules are pretty much just essays. Most of your assessments will either be in-class exams or hand-in. For speaking tasks, my school likes to have these 'interview' type tasks, where you sit down with a teacher and have to respond to a random question given on the day – this usually applies to one of the Modules. Otherwise you might have to do an in-class speech or a podcast.

I find EE1 to be a lot better, because you are basically only focusing on one module/elective and learning about this in depth as opposed to Advanced where content feels more rushed. Personally, it's more enjoyable than Advanced because of the content and the way it is taught – it's a lot more relaxed. In prelim, I had the 'Manifestation of the Monster' as my focus which basically talked about gothic texts – studied Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Gray. For HSC, I'm doing After the Bomb which focuses on the ways of thinking in the Cold War period following the dropping of the atomic bomb up until the fall of the Soviet Union. Before choosing EE1 you should probably see which modules/electives your school has chosen in the past and see if the content interests you, because really helped me in deciding whether or not to choose it.
Usually you have one speaking task; in prelim this was a group presentation, for HSC this was an in-class speech. After this there is a portfolio, consisting of an essay and creative. This helps a lot as the final exam only consists of these two sections.
