Hey everyone,

I’m currently in Year 11 and considering studying Engineering at UNSW as part of a double degree, but I’m unsure which one to pair it with—Law, Science, or Commerce. I also haven’t decided on which type of engineering to specialize in.

My current subjects are:
  • English Extension 1
  • Maths Advanced
  • Biology
  • Studies of Religion II
  • Italian Continuers
  • Visual Arts (which I’m planning to drop for Year 12)

I enjoy STEM and problem-solving, but I’m also a more creative person, so I’m unsure how hard the Engineering degree will be for me. I want a degree that will offer strong career prospects and flexibility.

If you’ve studied or are studying Engineering at UNSW, I’d love to hear your insights:
  • How did you decide on your double degree?
  • What are the pros and cons of Engineering with Law/Science/Commerce?
  • How is Engineering as a degree—what’s the workload like, and what should I expect?
  • What do you wish you knew before choosing your degree/double degree?
  • What are the career opportunities like for different Engineering majors?
  • How is employment demand looking for Engineering and the double degrees I’m considering in the future?
  • What should I be doing in Year 11 to prepare for Engineering or a double degree at UNSW?

Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance 😊

the most important consideration is how many years at uni the double degree would take. many ppl start their engineering double and then drop it later cause they realise it isn’t worth it. engineering/commerce will take 5.7 years whilst engineering/law will take 6.7, so both of them are not worth it. I also had a friend who started engo/commerce and dropped the commerce within a week 💀. science/engineering is probably the only one that’s worth it cause it’s 5 years so look into it. I think science/engineering is actually a popular combo too, with a lot of ppl picking chem, math, physics, bio, comp sci.
