hey

with normal household alarms i was just wondering if the smoke detector feature that they have is operational when the alarm is not armed; if the alarm is not actually armed in a room, eg through the day when I'm home and theres a fire, will it detect

I should think so. Smoke detectors work on passing a current through a chamber. While smoke enters the chamber, the current is disrupted and the alarm sounds.

I'd try and find out, but I'd say a smoke detector would always be on.

of course the smoke detector alarms are always on, what happens when you are asleep???

It's be a pretty shithouse alarm if it only went off while you had it armed, then let your house burn down if it wasn't.
