You know how a movie is made up of individual frames on a movie reel? That's how you make an animated gif.
Gifs you use a program such as Animation Shop by Jasc and what happens is you get a whole pile of pics and the program will create a gif file that runs through the pics, animating them.
So for example in one from you have an image of a person running, the next image has their legs moved just a bit, the next, a bit more, and so on.
