Ninja Scroll or Akira is always a good starter.
If you dont mind getting 4 episodes, Rurouni Kenshin 1st OVA is one of the best pieces of anime out.
Fist of the North Star has exploding people, limbs being chopped off and lots of martial arts
Cyber City Oedo or any Cyberpunk anime
The Guyver is a good series, i think theres a short OVA out
Hellsing aint bad, very stylised
Gunslinger Girls
Tsukihime
Airmaster

Ghost in the shell is a action/self discovery flick.

In the year 2029, the barriers of our world have been broken down by the net and by cybernetics, but this brings new vulnerability to humans in the form of brain-hacking. When a highly-wanted hacker known as 'The Puppetmaster' begins involving them in politics, Section 9, a group of cybernetically enhanced cops, are called in to investigate and stop the Puppetmaster. The pursuit will call into question what makes a human and what is the Puppetmaster in a world where the distinction between human and machine is increasingly blurry.
There is a lot of hidden meanings during the film

The movie is somewhat more about self discovery and what makes a human.

In affect the action simetimes takes a back seat but there is a lot of action in ghost in the shell: The movie

Overall a good film

Wouldn't really call it action, more a thriller/sci-fi

you should watch princess mononoke, it's not really that 'actiony' but it's a great movie.

umm, ghost in the shell the movie, i havnt seen it myself, but the series (from what i've seen is not bad), cowboy bebop - knocking on heavens door is a great movie too. but you should watch the series as well.
as stated above, kenshin ova,s it's about 4 eps, really worth it tho in my opinion, by far one of the best.

but yeah, to bring out the best of most anime, you must watch series (most of them only go for about 26eps ~20mins each ep), if you'd want recommendations, im sure myself, and many others will give you heaps, just pop a message in the anime thread, no need to read through it as i'd be happy to list you some ;D

anyway, enjoy!!!!!!!

Agree with funniboi. Some of the best anime movies require you to have some prior knowledge of the characters/plot of the series that gave birth to them.

e.g. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on Heaven's Door

Movies you can watch without seeing the series:

Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro & Lupin III's other incarnations, CoC is by far the best of the lot though
Vampire Hunter D (Generally.. crap, but it has its moments I guess)
Ninja Scroll
Read or Die OVA(3 episodes, so about the length of 1 feature length movie)
Porco Rosso (One of Studio Ghibli's best, and Studio Ghibli's the best and most prolific anime studio for movies.)
Voices From a Distant Star- 25 minute OVA much loved by hardcore and casual anime fans alike. Exceptionally dodgy character design are no obstacle to making this bittersweet little gem one of the best action anime around.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most overrated movies around. Right up there with Lord of the Rings and Shawshank Redemption.
