i need another way of saying "the film" when writing an essay
cant think of anything else except using the title of the movie and that also gets a little repetitive

I'll use Big Fish as an eg.

Burton's film, Burton's production, production, film, movie, and of course Big Fish. (and anime, documentary, blockbuster, cartoon, feature film, stop motion clay animation depending on your genre)

Preferably you would stick with only one though as it is easier to memorise and also makes it simpler for markers to notice where the integration of your texts occur. If it's a short film name i'd use 'Big Fish' whereas if it was something such as 'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' i'd lean towards Kaufman's film.

You can always use the "the text" as a generic term for all your related stuff. However, for films, never use "movie" because it is not formal enough. Besides, it doesn't really matter that you say "the film" 50 billion times in the essay. The markers expect it. Just make sure that you have a sentence of two between the repetitions of "the film".
