Lib push for antisocial conduct ban
By Rachel Kleinman
September 19, 2005

THE Victorian Liberal Party will ban antisocial behaviour such as bullying, loitering or making prank calls if it wins the next election.

The Liberals plan to introduce antisocial behaviour orders, modelled on a system used in Britain.

As part of their law and order policy they would spend $4.4 million over four years introducing the orders, known in Britain as ASBOs.

Liberal legal affairs spokesman Andrew McIntosh said ASBOs were civil orders that would prohibit offenders from specific acts or from entering specific areas, similar to intervention orders.

They would be issued by magistrates at the request of police or councils and would last a minimum of two years.

Breach of an order would be a criminal offence, with a maximum five-year prison term for adults, he said.

Don't the grannies already vote for the Libs anyway? Shouldn't they be trying to hook in the younguns.... like spend a bit of money on having a line where you can just call up and make stupid jokes when you are drunk on goon and some bureaucrat on the other end can pretend to care/be confused/laugh so you can jot it down in your "i'm cool" book? That would bring in the votes!
