I have an assessment on Rome, The Punic Wars..

This is my question:
Explain the reasons for any TWO Carthaginian victories in the Second Punic War

I also have to make extensive notes on all three of the Punic Wars. Any info or good sites that you know of to help me with the actual question would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks..

1. Hannibal. The man was a military genius, and strategically sound.
2. The Roman consuls. For the most part they were incompetent.

Give Livy a read, should have a good analysis, and he is a 'military' historian.

Re Punic Wars

Hi!

Have a look at the battles of Lake Trasimene and Cannae-both exhibit the tactical genius of Hannibal. Cannae especially is regarded as a classic example of outflanking and surrounding the enemy. Use the main sources plus any specialist military texts for specific information. Peter Connolly's The Armies of Hannibal is very useful. I'll see what else I can find in my files and email it to you.

good luck,

Re: ANY info would help :) - hannibal

this is to do with hannibal being able to win the battles, but not the war (2nd punic war). :
points to think about:

At the age of nine, he sailed off with his father, Hamiclar to Spain. He grew up learning warfare tactics from the many negotiations, minor sieges and skirmishes his father conducted.
  • a good point to mention is about flaminus - known as the delayer.
  • hannibal's glorious wins, - the battles at Lake Trasimene (217 B.C.), and at Cannae (216 B.C.), which resulted in a record amount of deaths, causing great humiliation to Rome. In reference to the battle at Lake Trasimene:
  • good quote: ‘At first the Romans tried to pretend that the engagement had ended with honours even on both sides. But as the casualty figures became clearer, so did the result. Hannibal had handed his enemies a beating.’[1]
  • And in mind of Rome’s stubborn refusal to give up, Hannibal laid out his most ingenious plan; sure that following a ‘crushing victory. he was certain that this time he would claim the surrender of his greatest enemy. Source D[3] is an image of the battle plan Hannibal performed, showing the three different stages in which Hannibal had planned his encirclement of the Roman legions. Once he had completed the third stage, the battle turned into a massacre on the Romans, and approximately 60,000 Roman soldiers were killed. This visual provides great understanding in Hannibal’s brilliance in not only tactics, but in leadership of his army to carry out such a difficult manoeuvre.

hope this helps :)
