Can i take it in first year?

Probably not as you won't have met the assumed knowledge requirements for this course. ALso, the handbook entries are outdated; the school of maths have cut a lot of subjects with low enrollments like this one.

Btw you should really do oceanography/meterology (part of applied maths) with physics (esp atmospheric physics).
