AOS - Section 1 last q (1 Viewer)

Hey

This is the question where i lose my marks on...(the 5 or 6 mark question).
If the question asks us to COMPARE AND CONTRAST - (similarities and differences), how would u set out the answer...

would you discuss...

text 1 , then text 2 , then state the similarities and differences?

any other tips regarding this section would also be great!

I hate this section too. I got 2/5 for this section in the trials.
What I do is that I write about the first text, then conjuction and linking sentences (like an essay), then discuss second text then link again to question and text 1 to end. But don't take my word for it. I need help too:Z

choose one simliarity or difference (usually a theme or technique) then discuss or show how this is used in text 1 and 2.
repeat for other similarities and differences, depending on the mark value.

I hate this question. I just end up repeating everything I said in the other questions, while favouring one text.

ok, now I feel hugely unprepared and ignorant. Is the last question of section 1 always the same? ie comparing and contrasting?

It could be- which two of these five texts do u choose to be in a magazine.Give reasons...

there's usually a few things u can use to "compare and contrast" in the earlier q's... sort of leading you to techniques/themes that are common in both texts. I just tend to use those and throw in a couple of others

Me too! What i realised was I didnt answer the question properly. If the question tells you that you need to pick a text for something to do with Journeys, make sure you tell them why its good. I talked about the audience or soem crap, and didn't once talk about the ideas about journeys that the texts expressed.

i got full marks.

you have to refer too all 3 texts and discuss the ones that you don't think are as effective and why, then discuss the text you DO think is effective and state why. You have to compare the texts and give reasons for it -- for example, that Text One evokes more mental imagery through the use of the extended metaphor as opposed to the the use of emotive language in text two. Or something like that.

I usually end up writing about 3-4 pages for that question.

an extended metaphor is a metaphor which continues beyond the normal metaphor

she is the sun is a normal metaphor

she is the sun which shines above and gives hope through her radiant warmth is an extended metaphor. (i think)

if someone else has a better example post it!

I thought an extended metaphor was one which is used throughout a piece of writing....eg if you're talking about this girl as the sun, then that metaphor is maintained throught the piece, referring to her radiance, then later mentioning her glow/warmth/etc...not sure though, i could be wrong

yeah thats it!!

its basically extended.... the first example i gave was extended and then if you continue the same train of thought throughout the piece then maybe it becomes a hyper-extended metaphor?

You're all forgetting the most obvious example, The road not taken! The road is a metaphor of a decision, its extendedn becasue its used throughout the whole poem
