Just wondering if anyone ever been through the appeals process? I want to appeal my pass on a psychology essay but i'm not sure how to go about it and whether it's a good idea!

I read in the unit outline that i have to speak to my tutor first (something i'd rather not do coz its like i'm doubting his marking abilities!)

Can anyone give me some insight into this, is it worth the trouble?

P.S I had a nightmare last night that i appealed and Kymbra marked it and she wrote lots of comments all over it in red pen and i failed!! Should i take this as a sign!? I also had a nightmare that i ate so much maccas and became so sick that i had to go to hospital :(

..Kymbra's not your tutor, is she?

I've not gone through it, but you need to talk to your tutor first. Generally, they seem pretty open to it, if you approach them the right way. Ask them where you sat in relation to the grading scheme, and what they think might happen if you were to go for a remark -- they'll have a feel for where you sit in relation to things, and if your mark is likely to move.

I don't believe you've got any recourse on the appealed grade, however (ie if they mark you DOWN), so the above would be a good more even if it weren't required as part of the procedure. MJ (or others who've gone through the process) might have some more insight... As soon as she's finished tonight's work, I'll prod her to take a look at this thread.

Forget the nightmare. It's anxiety. Go talk to your tutor. :)

lol Kymbra is the worst nazi marker in the world!

I've never been through the appeal process so i can't say but omg lol i would soo die if kymbra ever marked my essay again, which is why ive given my essay personally to my psy307 lecturer just in case kymbra marked it... she's marked 2 essays of mine.. and the highest she's ever given me is a credit plus :(.... and i really really worked hard on them too!

Basically, if you want to appeal your mark, you HAVE to talk to your tutor, because they have to make a comment on your appeals sheet (ie. whether they agree/disagree whether you have a case). Sometimes your mark might seem unfair, until you sit down with your tutor and they tell you what you didn't do right, and it seems really clear that your essay wasnt as good as you thought it was. Alternatively, they will look over it, and concede that your mark should be higher.

I used to think Kymbra was a nazi too, until I appealed the mark she gave my report in PSY236. I remember being really afraid because she seems totally whacked (and looks like a junkie!), but she was really, really nice, and just said that its your right as a student to have your report marked again. She's also gone through the process as a student, and therefore knows how frustrating it is. Luckily for me, she agreed that her mark wasnt fair (and I guess that was also represented in the fact I got a higher mark second time around).

So, go talk to your tutor, ask them for detailed feedback (which they will be happy to give), and if you still think your mark is unjustified, see them again, get them to fill in the sheet, and have it remarked.

Two points to remember:
* It must be done before you sit the final exam
* You must have a substantial reason (eg. marking guidelines), not just "I think I deserve a higher mark because I put effort into it". If your tutor agrees that you should have a remark, they will give you feedback as to what the reasons should be.

Good luck! :)

!&(@!$ the appealing process at UNSW is *(!@.

You must appeal within three days of the occurance or event. I had two exams overlapping in the midsemester examinations and I didnt know about the 3 day rule.
