Are teachers allowed to ...

hey
can someone tell me if teachers are entitled to alter the difference between students' marks (and changing the standard deviation)
so long as they keep the ranks the same?

Eg
student A actually gets 90 and is ranked 1st
student B actually gets 80 and is ranked 2nd

Can teacher change the marks to:

student A gets 90 and is still ranked 1st
student B gets 89 and is still ranked 2nd

Teachers do this so that the top student/s pull the rest up
(and consequently will be dragged down - i think)

ARe they entitled to do that?

If a teacher feels that the assessment marks don't accurately reflect the 'true' relative differences between students, they might alter them.

I know that it's sometimes done, but they're really not meant to.

Doing this is a way to give the students a higher UAI right?

well i think its to give the lower groups higher marks so the school won't have so many band 1 or 2.

But as a consequence top students (not neccessarily 1st)
will be lowered because according the school "Assess. mark"
the top group is not much better than the lower group (if teacher wants to alter the diff).
