i was wondering about how well my subjects scale. I'm doing: english adv, english ext, bio, drama, modern, maths (2unit) and exploring early childhood (non uai course). but i was gettin a bit worried coz lots of ppl are saying that drama, bio n modern have crappy scaling. is this true? coz i want a high uai but im not giving up any of those subs. hmmm *scratches head* what do u think?

the trick is that you check what a crap scaling subject gets, for example lets say everyone gets band 3-4, if you hit 5/6 then you get scaled UP

for example, if you do english standard and hit band 6 your scaling goes through the roof because only a handful of people in the STATE get that

the trick is to beat/destroy the average of ANY subject, whether its ext 2 maths, or easy subjects

you can check up the scaling of courses on this site somewhere in the non-community section, so you can just compare how subjects are scaled.

anyways, if you do well in your chosen subjects, it should matter much. it's probably just as bad as doing really crappy in a good scaling subject. but i dunno, so yeah, you should do subjects based on what you enjoy

scaling doesnt matter as much as people say it does.. our maths head teacher told us a story the other day about a girl who did 2 category B subjects, no science and all arty subjects, general maths and standard english.. and she got a UAI of 96. She did this because she was GOOD at every subject she was doing, she didnt give a shit about how her subjects scaled, she didnt do them because of courses she wanted to do at uni.. she did them because she liked them and she was good at them..

the moral to my story is.... scaling means crap if your doing really well :) it jus rewards you :)

It's a better idea to have a look at SAM's graphs, though and have a bit of a fiddle with SAM.

so does dat mean if i get band 5 or 6 in business studiess and only a few ppl in the state get that does dat mean i'll get scaled up?????????????

i have seen about 5% of people get band 6 so maybe not as much, im not sure but i was told that the more you beat the average the higher the scaling

so if average is band 5 and you get band 5 then you wont go far, if average is band 3-4 (ie. english standard) and you hit 6 you will get high scaling (not as high as obviously a higher scaled subject, but its high none hte less)

Well what the hell is the point of doing english advanced, when you can do standard and absolutely kill everyone?

It's much harder to gain a band 6 in standard. Yeah, I was of that mentality when I first tried 3U English. The guy who topped Standard last year ('04) could've gotten a 100 if he'd done Advanced (he got 99.95 and placed in top 10 for everything else)

They make it extremely difficult for people to get a band 6 in Standard to try and stop people from 'dumbing down'.

lala2: probably not! pass his marks over here if you're so sure!

First poster:
I wish idiots would stop asking does yadda yadda give me a high UAI: the truth is, to have a high UAI you need to be good at all 10 units!

As an example:
if you do Standard Eng where Adv. Eng exists, it's not because of the subject that your UAI sucks, it's because YOU are not talented enough, as apparent from your subject choice.

I would strongly assert that all high UAI people could've got it with a different set of 10 units.

With your subjects you have the potential to get anywhere between 30 (or below) to 100.
In fact that is true with almost every combination (discounting some "General Maths + Arabic Beginners + some other crummy subjects which are obviously inferior to another" combination).

Estel, here are his rankings (couldn't find marks):

19th in Business Studies
4th in Chemistry
top of English Standard
5th in Mathematics

If you browse around the board a little more, you'll find that the census is that it's much harder to get a band 6 in standard because most people capable of getting a band 6 n it have done advanced, and to prevent people from 'dumbing down'. Only two people got bands 6s in '04, and one before that in '03, so it is extremely difficult.

Standard and Advanced scale the same, so it comes down to your raw marks. This is why that guy didn't get a UAI of 100. He probably only got 90 or 91 at the most, which kills your chances at a UAI of 100.

90 HSC mark in Standard: 94 scaled mark (2003)
I don't believe his English mark was sufficient to sink him out of 100... in that year he would've needed a 95 in Advanced to beat that scaled mark... was he capable? And also, the gap between 99.95 and 100 tends to be quite large.

My guess is it's his 5th subject which cost the 100.
