Um, I haven't read the book but maybe Peter Weir's film "Gallipoli" is an okay related text. The antagonist, Frank, is cynical and pessimistic and this seems to be similiar to this Holden character you speak of. Maybe it would be cool to go into further detail about the fact that Holden is the protagonist and Frank from Gallipoli is the antagonist and compare/contrast the pair. Also, Frank puts on facades to hide his true personality whereas Holden cannot stand people's fakeness. So maybe that opposite might be a good concept to develop further. Also the idea of the pair both in a kind of 'identity crisis'. Frank's understanding of the world and sense of maturity (e.g. can see past the facade of the glory of war) but in contrast puts on facades (e.g. that he is rich and snobby), and Holden's intellect and sensitivity masked by cynicism and pessimism.

P.S Don't take my word for it.

P.P.S I have no idea about related texts...

Komninos' poem 'Nobody calls me wog, anymore' might be good for characters struggling with their identity. It's a fairly accessible poem.
