Is it in the first year of your arts degree that you can try out various subjects?
When do you decide your major?

eg. I want to major in English and Writing (a new major in 2010) so that's 2 separate majors but I also want to try out anthropology or psychology...is that possible in my first year?

Btw what are external units?

A major is really determined at the end of your degree, they look back and basically check what area you've completed the most units/credit points in.

You're really free to try out any subject you want as long as you have space for it, and can still complete the relevant major by the end of your degree (whether that be 3 or 4 years).

You'll be able to try out anth subjects easily, but psych subjects have a pre-requisite that you have to satisfy before you enrol: PSY104 - 2010 Course Handbook - Macquarie University

And finally external units are units which you do by 'correspondence', so that you don't attend classes but may have to participate in online discussions in lieu of face-to-face tutorials, etc. They are usually taken by those without the time to actually attend classes in person (working full time/have to look after kids, etc) but do require a certain bit of personal impetus as you don't have someone barking down at you to get things done.
