Assesment Task Crisis : Speculative Fiction (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, ive just started year 12 this term and I just recieved an English Extesion Assesment worth 30%. I don't know where to start with this assesment as i have not been at school for 4 weeks due to braking my leg playing sport!!

The assesment is asking for us to select explore, analyse and critically evaluate a related text in the context of Spec. Fiction. I also have to justify my selection in my understanding of genre theory and Spec. Fiction. I aslso have to anaylse codes and convetions and exploration of values. And finally how and why it could be valued.

Does anyone have any suggestion for any related texts i can look at that is well related to spec fiction and does anyone have a clue about relating spec fiction to genre theory?

Don't be scared by 'Genre Theory'. Basically you just have to know that it exists. In terms of relating a text to genre theory you should look at what genre is (I'll tell you now, it's way more than a classification system but you'll have to develop your own ideas, have a poke around some articles) THEN, you'll come acros conventions. Find those that are typical to SF and then find a text that fits. In my experience it is better to first understand the ideas before applying them.

A text I wouldstrongly recomend is Joss Whedon's 2005 film 'Serenity' It is not only an immensely enjoyable film, it embodies much of the essence of Spec fiction - morals, ethics, abuse of technology, genetic manipulation... etc etc.
