Is it ok for a teacher to hand out an assessment item which we have 1 week to do, and which is within 2 weeks of the trial exams?

I think thats unfair to be honest.

you're supposed to get 2 weeks notice for a start, so thats a bit unfair in any case. im not sure what the rules are about setting tasks close to exams however. at my school i think they dont give out tasks, or make them due, within one week of an exam.

My maths teacher said something the other day about there being a two week period before the exams in which teachers aren't allowed to give assessments. That might just be a school rule- does the BOS have anything to say officially about it?
Certainly the one week's notice seems unfair. Call the Board of Studies and find out if you have any options.

Its school policy at my school to

a) Not schedule an assesment within 2 weeks of the start of Half Yearlies or Trials, and
b) give 2 weeks notice for an assesment.

Although that is only at my school, It seems that most schools have similar rules in place (so may very well be a bos guideline)

The 2 weeks notice thing is almost definitely set in stone from what I can gather, I don't have any hard evidence with me, and I'm too busy to look it up but I'm sure I've read it somewhere. As for the non-assessment period for 2 weeks beforehand, well our school doesn't follow that so I'm guessing it's not a rule or my school just sucks. However, it is policy at my school not to schedule any assessments after trials, so I guess it's all upto the individual school.
