if i were to write an essay on the impact of recent trends in the value of the $A, would i focus on y the australian dollar is appreciating...or how it effects the economy?..

Well, "impact of recent trends in the value of the $A" would mean how it affects the economy. It's closely linked to "impact of recent trends on the value of the $A" which would look at why the dollar itself is appreciating.

By recent i'd say last couple of years.

Might be worth to mention what happened in 2001; very important year, loads to talk about. Ie, end of dot.com boom/september 11 -> Au dollar reachers $0.48 US -> BOGS surplus.


Then you can talk about now.
24 year high AU dollar due to shit such as interest differential (Approx. 4%; Aus 7.25 %, US 3%) -> attracting foreign investment -> strong dollar -> servicing repayments (debit on net Y account of BOGS -> woresning CAD) and blah blah.


Exchange rates can be linked with so much shit you can go on forever and ever.


To get bonus marks, i'd recommend you talk about J curver theory.
