Anyone heard of Bob Carr's new book? My Reading Life. Meant to be his guide to literature's classical canon. Looks worth the 35 bucks, but im not sure when i'll have the time to read it.

Nats and Libs agree merger

THE leaderships of the Liberal and National parties in Queensland have agreed to merge - pending a vote of Liberal Party members in coming weeks.

The parties have proposed fighting the next state election - due in 18 months' time - under the name the Liberal National Party of Queensland.

The new party will be led by Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg with Liberal Party leader Marc McArdle as his deputy.

National members have already voted to support the idea.

Results from the Liberal plebiscite are due by the end of June ahead of a proposed joint party convention on July 26 and 27.

If all goes according to plan, the new party will be launched on July 27.

The new party will be a division of the federal Liberal Party and an affiliate of the federal Nationals.

Yeah, I think that is a good idea, it is about time, especially in QLD, three cornered contests really killed chances the Nationals/Liberals had in a number of seats such as Flynn and Forde.

However I did read somewhere that Senator Sue Boyce was not a fan of the idea, suggesting that the conservative base of the Nationals would combind with the conservative elements of the Liberals to marginalise the moderates within the Liberals.

Whether or not I take an interest in them depends solely on how much they are edited to protect their party's reputation.

I expect Howard's to be little more than a hagiography in disguise, while the tone of Costello's book will give an indication of whether he's leaving or not. If he is, then he has the chance to write the new Latham Diaries.

Three cornered contests hurt the coalition in state elections which are optional preferential, not so much in federal where they're compulsory preferential...

As the poster above me said, don't blame me, I voted Liberal too.

This is basically a ridiculous nanny state proposal along with increased alcohol taxes, etc. Why not funnel the money towards arresting paedophiles or something instead of punishing innocent people by having slower, government-filtered internet?

I don't know if I like the idea solely on the basis that the Nationals are agrarian socialists. Really, as if the Liberal Party needed to become even more statist. Don't get me wrong, I love the Libs, but they need to get back to their small-government roots.

There is talk that a break away party may be a result of the merger. We may see something here as there is in America with the merged party acting like Republican Party being the main centre right force with a Libertarian based party such as the LDP growing from disaffected libertarians from the Liberals who think that they are not getting a fair go. However, the odds of a merger happening at least in NSW at a state level I think are minimal.

Re WAF about preferences - you are right, however I think the key words you used were "not so much," three cornered contests hurt federally, but as you said, not as much as at the state level.

Because we're so geographically spread out, managing Western Australia from Canberra would make the WAlians feel left out and they might secede
