in regard to medical treatment...

Gillick's Case introduced the idea of parental responsibility and stated that children under 16 treatment [contraception] was the responsibility of the parents.

In my textbook it says that children 14+ have the right to make their own medical treatment decisions, including about contraception.

Is this just a difference in law between Aus and UK, or can anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks! ;D

According to my notes from the age of 14 children have the right to seek and obtain medical advise and treatment without the consent or knowledge of their parentes. This is covered under the Minors (Property and Contracts) Act 1970 (NSW). I'm pretty sure this is accurate, but you may want to check it.
Gillick's Case should not have any effect in Australia as it was in the UK, Heinemann's (or that other textbook we used) is notorious for putting in completely useless information and passing it off as promoting critical thinking. Even if it was heard it would only be affirming statue law.
