Hi! I was wondering if doing Medical Science for 3 years is a complete risk in order to apply for Graduate Medicine. Also, if one is not successful in entering Graduate Med, is Optometry available, or is it mainly a course for HSC students ?
Thanks guys.

its not a complete risk, but its kind of one of those degrees that leads to nowhere......

nursing or OT at least gets you registered with a medical board and has jobs you can walk into

I think if your goal is to do medicine in the master level....To use 3 yrs do m science is not a complete risk......But of cuz, to do m science is not only just to prepare to do Medincine....but also you can do 4th year in order to do medical reasearch......But its really difficult....as i think

yeah, thanks for that....

hi garry007
Bascially, doing a Medical science degree will NOT make it easier to get into Graduate medicine. You are better off doing a more flexible degree, like B Science, in which you get more subject selections. It is the marks you get from those subjects, combines with your GAMSAT and interview that will contribute to your chance of getting into medicine at the graduate level, not the name of the degree.

I hope I can make this clear, because it is a misconcenption that doing a B Medical Science will increase your chance in getting into medicine. It is a research degree, like B science bascially.

From what i heard, many ppl said graduating Bmedsc has limited job opportunities apart from B Business, accounting, commerce etc. This sounds right?

No...never heard of it. However, the top 10 in med science may have a high enough mark (and UMAT and Interview scores) that enable them to transfer to med.

Job prospect depends on many, many different things. You need experience in the industry, academic ability (uni marks), your personal skills and amongst other things. Your course ALONE does NOT determines whether job opportunities are limited or not. If you have all of the qualities mentioned above, there's no reason why you couldn't get a job in institutions like CSIRO, other research centres, labs etc as do many scientists do.

Not true. The majority of graduate medicine students in most universities come from a medical science degree. The source for my information comes from the faculty websites of Aus uni's. Take a look at uSyd's website; they have that information readily availbale.

Perhaps the top 10 will be able to transfer after 1 year but a large amount of med sci students are able to pass GAMSAT and interview to get a spot in graduate medicine.

Not neccessarily. Someone who isn't top 10 could still easily get in, you should know this by now. It's about how much you want med, what is the true reason for being a doctor and those sort of stuffs. And I think the interviewers are able to see through and differentiate those who just want to do med because of the fortune/reputation attached.

That's a big call. I see a Medical Science degree as a science degree with an emphasis on the biomedical sciences. Hence, I do not see how a Medical Science degree lessens one's employment opportunities than others ie a science graduate majoring in geology has limited opportunities in getting a position in medical research.

A medical science degree is an excellent course for those who wish to pursue a career in medical research. I believe a lot of students who I have come across, who wish to become a 'doctor' and get into medicine because they want to cure cancer etc, are a little misdirected. Sure, many researchers undertook their undergraduate degrees in medicine, although I believe this is the discipline of medical research. A general MBBS has an emphasis on the clinical aspects of medicine. The medical doctors that I have come across all undertook further study in science to become research scientists or research clinicians (i.e. PhD).

I hope that helps!

Regards,
David

There's a thread in the General university forum that answers your question.
