Anyone else see the protestors outside integral on the news, they were protesting the construction of above ground transmission lines?

A laudable enough goal in itself transmission towers are ugly and telegraph poles are ugly and dangerous. However one suspects the real concern of these residents is nothing more than property value. Their moral high horse was built around the assumption that when power lines are below ground they will magically be less harmful. BULL SHIT! and I think for these protestors to misrepresent so grossly is disgusting.... I look foreward to the Current Affair and Today Tonight follow up stories (Frontline topic eroding brain.... or building it?).

Even this assumption is based on the idea that transmission lines are harmful, which is untrue, they are high voltage lines so that Wallerawang, Mt Piper and the other power stations dont have to be within 3km of our houses. High voltage in itself is no danger, it isnt arcing so its not like x-rays are being produced and so fucking what if a flouresecant light will work under it. Yippee free light.

There is a reason that they are so tall and ugly as well, its so that they arn't close enough to us that they might arc and kill us. Whilst we're on stupidity around electricity anyone who climbs into a sub-station and dies is not deserving of some special compensation.

The Oatley protesters a few months ago were protesting against a mobile phone tower in a children's park... Are they harmful to health?

Mmmm..... high voltage electricity wires and mobile phone towers are unknown quantities with regards to health. The higher voltage wires have more energy - they won't cause arcs to jump off and burn the neighbourhood, but there is an increased level of electromagnetic radiation around, and it's unsure whether that has long term adverse effects. The suspicion is that it may have some limited health impacts.
It's a similar story with mobile phone towers - those living close to them experience much stronger levels of microwave radiation (microwave frequencies being the ones used for mobile phones) than elsewhere, which may or may not be a health risk. However, people don't know this, assume the worst and protest like NIMBYs. Are they justified in doing so? Perhaps - it might be safer not to take the risk, who knows...

there have been recent studies that show that living under power lines can increase the rate of cancer. Yes puttting them underground if u know nething about electromagnetic waves you will realise that because they have to travel through solid objects their strength will be decreased esp if it is something like concrete - hasn't ur radio ever gone fuzzy as u drove through a tunnel?

A recent study showed that eating cooked chips can cause cancer...yes, thats right...chips. Anyway, you've got just as much chance of getting cancer by using a mobile than by sitting under a power line.

The study was done by csiro and also come down to my suburb and explain why there is a 6 times higher rate of breast cancer amongst the women who live in the area under the high voltage power lines!!! Also tell my mates mums that their breast cancer isn't because of the power line!!! I know 3 personally who have been diagnosed over the past 12 months who live in that area

Your point? I agreed with you, but I said you can get cancer from anything these days.

When I lived in Avalon in Sydney I went to Bilgola Public School, we had a mobile tower right next door to the school, the school and P&C complained, even though conclusive tests hadven't been completed as yet.
