Bands You Recommend To Others (2 Viewers)

OK, I thought this would be a good place to plug a few bands I've been listening to a lot of lately that really haven't made much of an impact in Australia, but have a smallish following over in the US or the UK. Triple J play them occasionally, but people are too stupid to listen to good radio where variety is actually a factor in air-play rather than money. Anyway, I'm digressing. Here's a few bands that you SHOULD be listening to unless you're brain dead followers of Simple Plan.

- Radiohead: Alright, alright, they've made it big in our lovely country, but if I didn't mention them in 80% of my posts then I will shoot myself dead.
Songs to try: There There, Karma Police, Creep, Fake Plastic Trees, 2+2=5, Where I End and You Begin.

- Sigur Ros: Amazing music. Known to cripple their live audiences to tears...it's amazing stuff. They're an Icelandish band singing in a language of their own which they made up exclusively for their music.
Songs to try: Let Af Lifi, Agaetis Byrun, Nothing Song

- Mogwai: Very atmospheric, moody music with basically no lyrics. Their music is that deep that lyrics aren't a neccessity here though.
Songs to try: Hunted By A Freak, Stanley Kubrick, 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong

- Pedro the Lion: A brilliant two member band with music that really tugs at your heart strings. Every song has lyrics which could easily make up a novel, they're a series of mini-stories sung by a man with a beautiful voice with guitars complementing his brilliance. A male version of Missy Higgins?
Songs to try: Rapture, I Am Always The One Who Calls, Progress.

- Feeder: Great song-writing. They've been around for a while in England, and while they've dabbled in the Australian market, they haven't really promoted themselves too much...again..they will never make it big here because Triple J are the only guys who'll play them. Won some fame through Gran Turismo 3.
Songs to try: Buck Rogers, Just a Day, Quickfade, Come Back Around, Find the Colour.

- Ash: Reasonably big here...known without being well-known. North Ireland rockers played often by Triple J. Played at splendour and could well be coming here for the Big Day Out in '05. Simple rock.
Songs to try: Aphrodite, Burn Baby Burn.

ooo mogwai love

pavement - pretty much anything stephen malkmus has done really. pavement are quintessential american indie. shit guitars and all. (though malkmus proved himself to be an accomplished guitarist in the silver jews and his solo work)
radiohead - they need less mentioning now, when i first came to this board only a few members knew them. now most people would probably have heard of them atleast.
mogwai, gy!be, do make say think, explosions in the sky, tortoise, sigur ros - pretty much any post rock.
slint - precursor to post rock
television, my bloody valentine and sonic youth - less familiar with sonic youth sadly, but they're all pretty essential 70s-90s guitarbands.
tom waits - i prefer his catalogue from swordfish trombones onward, but its all excelent.
frank zappa - in my eyes, probably the greatest contempary musican.
carl newman/new pornographers - canadian powerpop
jason molina/songs: ohia, pappa m, will oldham, jim o'rourke - verging on country i guess. american folk/country musicians that have all had prolific and very versatile careeers.

I love these bands. I suggest you have a listen to;

Dashboard Confessional- The alternative rock outfit Dashboard Confessional hails from Boca Raton, FL, and is chiefed by singer/songwriter Christopher Carrabba. Marking his first solo effort with the release of The Swiss Army Romance, Carrabba also fronted other rock bands such as Further Seems Forever and the Vacant Andies. Dashboard Confessional allows Carrabba to mold simple acoustics with passionate wordplay to make for a delightful introduction to his individual work. I suggest you d/l "Bend And Not Break" (my fav song).

Rooney- Rooney is a five-piece rock band hailing from Los Angeles whose music is reminiscent of artists spanning from the sixties to the present day. Although they have a distinctive style, their sound has been compared to everything from The Beatles to The Cars to Blur. Having toured the nation with acts such as Weezer and The Strokes, Rooney manages to capture elements from the past four decades and make them sound modern today. I suggest you d/l "Stay away" and "Blue side".

Phantom Planet (who also sing the theme song for the OC)- they sound like a fight between My Bloody Valentine, Fugazi, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Wire, Gang Of Four, Guided By Voices, The Who, The Cure, The Replacements, The Jam, A Certain Ratio, Bad Brains, A.R.E. Weapons, Blur, Chik Chik Chik, The Flaming Lips, The Clash, Television, The Specials, The English Beat, Early U2, Sean Paul, Magnetic Fields, Led Zeppelin, and whoever your favorite band is. I suggest you d/l "One ray of sunlight" and "Hey now girl".

huun-huur-tu - four piece band from a little country near Mongolia, 'Tuva'. they have an amazing vocal technique where they can create two tones in their voice at one time.

this heat - quite possible one of the greatest post-punk bands ever. just listen to their album 'deceit' and be blown away

isis - these guys are just mammoth in sound. epic post-hardcore / sludge metal which also draws from a lot of post-rock influences.

jackie-o motherfucker - beautiful combination of avant-garde, free jazz, noise, electronica, folk, country + world music

dalek - hip hop group, that successfully combines traditional hip hop with the avant-garde. draws from bands like my bloody valentine, as well as a lot of krautrock like neu!, faust and can

peter brotzmann (quartet) - the most brutal, ear piercing, earth shattering, intense free jazz artist on the planet

and just cause i've been listening to these guys pretty much non-stop the last few days

sunn 0))) - drone/noise/black metal. kind of heard to categorise, but these guys pretty much create the soundtrack for the apocalypse. "flight of the behemoth" is one of the best metal albums ever released, especially because of the two tracks mixed by japanese noise artist 'merzbow'.

fela kuti - inventor of 'afro-beat' and a political prisoner. from nigeria, his style mixes jazz, funk and traditional african music together. there's heaps of interesting stories about this guy and the political oppression that went on. the nigerian government once sent 1000 troops to fela's compound (which fela tried to make an independent state)- they went in, burnt everything including his master tapes and instruments, then pushed fela's mother off the top floor, killing her.

there was another incident where they stormed his compound and tried to plant marijuanna on him so they could convict him. fela swallowed the weed, then when he was in prison he swapped his crap with another inmate- the police had to let him go, otherwise they would've had to admit to their corruption. fela's response was his album 'Expensive Shit' (which is also my favourite of his). definitely worth checking out

fake? is my favourite band, and i'm pretty sure most of you have nfi who they are they're jrock (japanese rock), but a lot of their songs are in english, the lead singer is half-british. yum.

holy shit you mentioned pedro AND radiohead, ohh, i love you. do you own it's hard to find a friend? it's so beautiful, except my copy is scratched to shit and i bought it for $40 from red eye way back when and now i can't find it anywhere :|
pavement are also an excellent fucking suggestion.

i also recommend hum and modest mouse if you're into indie. hum is a bit rockier; i have yet to get around to listening to the new mm album but apparently it's a lot different so maybe go with the moon + antartica & earlier.

pushmonkey and chevelle have some good stuff going.

also i recommend early death cab for cutie. their latest album is kinda meh with a few exceptions. dashboard confessional eat dick.

1. Bliss n Eso - Sydney based group with incredible talent. Bliss n Eso's music is filled with imagination, creativity and skills. They have have recently released their debut full length album "Flowers In The Pavement" through Obese Records and have just started their National Tour.
