I like to get a casual job in this job market, a job perhaps just for weekends, if impossible alternatives could be mixed up.

What is the best way for me to get started?

I've got a few years experience in hospitality, no experience in bar tending. Got about 6 months experience in waitressing, table managing and all the rest basically being a kitchen hand.

What's the opportunity for a guy like me to get into this area?

Get an RSA. You might even need an RCG depending on where you want to work. If your really serious about it you might also want to do a short training course at tafe so you have some qualifications. Then look for a job.

It's a good thing you read what I posted so you didn't just repeat what I said.

well yes you will need your rsa and rcg

but it is also recommended you do safe handling of food and a bar skills course- you need the safe handling of food as pubs are required to offer you food if you need to stop drinking and slow down...

but not many places will take up a bartender for a casual job with no experience and knowledge, you need to work nights and preferably full time...they expect alot out of you because you are responsible for servicing liquor as stated by the law- you fuck up and the owners get fined

its great if you have a great knowledge of alcohol, other than drinking at parks on the weekend with mates...plus the skills to back it up so if any customer walks in you are able to service them :)

id start off if you want as a casual or part time at a bottle shop to gain the knowledge you will need of liquors and get those other certificates

after which when you have more free time to work more hours you can apply with confidence and some enthusiasm

good luck :)

well its just that employers have lots of backpackers and other people coming in with their rsa and rcg too

its just they are available to work a lot more hours than you can thats the problem

What's the rate per hour for bartenders?

And what's the difficulty rate for applying for a casual job?

id say its much easier to get a casual job at a club bartending if you happen to be hot- just the way it is....

other than that casual work is hard to come by unless you can work odd hours or what not, but i guess you might get lucky

i highly doubt it though

like i said- gain some more knowledge, some more certificates, any other useful skills and the be able to offer more hours

My friend works in a club he does a mix of celler, security and bar. He used to be mainly bar. He did a traineeship for a year and now is a PPT'er. he gets nearly 22 an hour, but no loading on holidays as by his contract, tho he gets holidays and stuff.
As josie killer said get as many certifications and do as many couses as you can, becuase its a competetive ndustry and something that you ned to build experience with as most employers require prior experience. Alex Beaumont as a good 5 day bar course, which shows you how to do things like cocktails, as well as ur basics, customer service, money handling and job searchinh skills.
If your serious about the industry that is.

yeah i did a one day bar skills course at tcg or tcp training solutions

ive forgotten what its called, but those skills courses just give you same basic info thats handy to know

dont get me wrong, but bartending....even if you are lucky enough to get a casual position is hard

it requires dedication as natstar said, if you are only there for social fun what not you will probably hate it after a while

its not a fun job serving drunk ppl while you are tired, working at night sober....

Yeah and til very late hours as well...Don't you have a full-time job too? I think it will tire you out personally, but go for it if you wanna do it.

ive worked in a pub in the mountains for 7 months... just pulling beers, doing normal spirits etc and the odd cocktail and shot.. however ive done numerous cocktail courses and shot course, eg. martini's, flame shots etc.... go out and get as many courses as possible.... however even with the courses u aint gunna get a job sometimes, cause some managers are stupid and couldnt be bothered training new staff.... but yeah ill keep my job for the moment, but am looking to work overseas in clubs doin my flames etc.....
my next course is juggling flamable cocktail course, gunna be awesome...
