I'm not entirely sure this belongs here but nevertheless...

Does anyone here
1.Go to uni full time,
2. Pay minimum $160 in rent AND
3. Work part time? OR
4. Know somebody who does all three of the above?

The reason i ask is that i have to move out next year and my rent will be $170 per week, sharing with another girl. I want to do a Bachelor of Arts at UNSW and I am wondering if this is feasable ie. is it possible for a normal person (not an organised super freak) to juggle the work load, contact hours and do enough part time work to pay rent and bills?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)

HOW can your rent be $160 a week if you're sharing!?!??!!

sounds like you'd be living in style?

or are you already counting food and such?

I'm moving out in July after this semester ends, but I did, although, move out for a bit during Year 12 (not the best idea)

is there any possible way you could get more people sharing with you?

i mean, get the friend to share the room with you and rent out the spare room to a couple or something...

its going to get heaps long to get use to balancing your uni/work/finances if you're like me, so do it during a semester break etc? cuz last year when i moved out, it took aaaages for me to get balanced, but i got there.

and it also helps if you have something to fall back on, like a rich friendly friend, or your parents...

oh, and take a look at centrelink as well, cuz for a while after school ends, your income doesn't affect your youth allowance, and you'd be living away from home etc... i dunno, see if you qualify for that, AS WELL AS rent assistance

:) good luck!

Quite easily, I'm in a sharehouse with 3 others paying $130 a week (the house isn't exactly a palace either). To live on college at uni you'd be looking at somewhere around the $200 mark per week.

I know a few people working part time and going to uni, and if you are doing a Bachelor of Arts at UNSW you'd have time to work because you only do 12 hours a week (in first year at least).

in ryde, where i live, its $170 for a two bedroom apartment. Ryde's about 30 minutes away from CBD, so $85 a week

but then again, food and stuff adds up etc.

i was going to move out last month with two girls, a sharehouse in balmain, which was $300 (and something) a week. Didn't get to cuz those two girls had a fight and one of them moved out spontaneously... anyway long story, the point is, we found places that offered free broadband internet & cable tv. i don't know about you, but that's a huuuuge plus that i missed out on.

hope all goes well for you :) by the way, when do you plan to move out?

Well, I want to get a job as soon as I finish the HSC on November 3! So hopefully i will have enough money to pay the bond and one months rent+food by February next year.

Yeah, free internet and cable would be such a plus...Somehow I don't think I'll be getting the internet when i move out :( I'm not too sure where Ryde is but i'm planning on moving to Randwick and there 170 aweek sharing is pretty much the status quo. My parents own the place which makes it seem less of a biggie... but we still have to pay the standard rate or i'd feel way too guilty living there. It's close to the uni which is good. And the beach which is also good. ;)

$160 a week or $160 a fornight? $160 a fornight is a really good deal for places close to UNSW. $160 a week is average I guess for a reasonable 2 bedroom apartment in the Eastern Suburbs.

You should check with other art students how intese your degree is, though considering it's an Arts degree, it shouldn't be too bad.

I don't mean to offend anyone with that last comment.

Well if you only want a room to live in, you could rent the ones near Campus~
They are only around $60-$80 p/w. And they are right next to UNSW~ (around 10min walk)

It's those apartments where each unit has 3-4 rooms with a kitchen, toilet & a small laundry. Each student could rent one of the rooms and they all share those facilities~

The rooms are alright if you are not looking for a very big bedroom & living room. They are those normal size bedrooms~ So at the price ranging between $60 & $80 is actually not bad for students~ Since basically you only need to work for 1 day then you can pay for the week's rent~
