Currently, Bill Shorten and the AWU is up in arms over the safety issues surrounding the mine, acting as the workers saviour and negotiator.
The late Richard Carleton reported that there were safety concerns at the mine, before the whole drama occurred. Something which was fobbed off by mine management as inappropriate at that stage of the process...
Now if that were to be true, then why did the union representatives of the workers at the mine fail to properly address the issue and ensure that the mine was absolutely safe before any worker entered to perform any duty.
Isn't it the role of the union representative to ensure that safety and other issues are resolved before any worker enters the workplace? Obviously it is speculation at this stage, but if it proves to be true, then shouldn't the union take some responsibilty for failing to perform their role, particularly if the safety concerns were common knowledge?
Any thoughts?
