Dear Macquarians

My name is Nicholas Mueller and I am your Student Member on University
Council. I am writing to update you on what has been happening with student
representation at our beautiful University.

After three general meetings of students in June and July, it was clear that
students who wanted to make a difference to student representation at Uni
needed to be organised. A first step in this process was to set up a student
representation working group. The students I chose for this group came from
the many people who attended the initial meetings. These students
represented a broad spectrum of students on campus and included Women and
Queer representatives, International representation, Executive members of
Clubs and Societies, first-year students and an Academic Senator.

This working group achieved a huge amount in a relatively short period of
time and I would like to thank Jarryd Daymond, Natalie Dabarera, Christopher
Redfern, Mark Zoellner, Ben Landsberry, Elizabeth Green, Alessandra
Peldova-McClellend and the many other students who have been part of the
process, including Tim Hendry, Michael Cao and Rohan Hughes.

Concurrent with the development this project has been the metamorphosis of
Students At Macquarie (SAM), Macquarie University Sport and Recreation (MUSR)
and Venues At Macquarie into U@MQ. I am on the Board of this not-for-profit
student services company and am very enthusiastic about the course in which
it is headed with the fantastic direction of Deidre Anderson (CEO) and the
Board.

Myself, and all members of the working group were invited to attend the
first U@MQ strategic Planning Retreat. At this retreat, students concluded
that the way forward was to develop a Student Committee within U@MQ. This
committee will represent students to achieve an exceptional University
experience for all students. Students will be elected to this committee and
the election will occur at the earliest appropriate time.

Until an election can take place, students will be represented by an interim
U@MQ Student Committee appointed by the Board of U@MQ.

Any student with an interest in representation is encouraged to apply.
Application is as simple as filling in a short form. Being part of this
process will be a challenging and worthwhile experience. For a copy of the
Student Committee Application Form please visit either www.sam.org.au (
http://www.sam.org.au/ ) or www.musr.mq.edu.au ( http://www.musr.mq.edu.au/ )
where you can immediately download the form. Alternatively you can contact
Marion Malouf at mmalouf@sam.mq.edu.au

Thanks for reading. I will continue to update you on the developments as
they occur. If you want to contact me, please email. I am would love to
hear from you.

Now is the time to be an active part of campus life!

Cheers

Nicholas Mueller
Student Member on University Council
$10 says the only councilors are horrible overly-PC characters who push the kind of queer/Palestinian/etc rights that have eroded the USyd SRC for the past few years.

so are we right to assume you won't be applying, pwar? would you prefer to criticise the system from the outside? or get in and negotiate to make it more of what you want it to be?

the people who get onto the committee will be the students who have the time and energy to volunteer to be part of University life. they will have the support to do an amazing job.

and i would like to mention i have not heard one conversation about palestine in the whole time i have been involved in student representation. sydney uni has a particular culture of student representation. macquarie has a chance to create our own unique culture.

Royal we, Nicky? :D I'd be a terrible representative, I'm doing the SRC and students a favour by not getting involved with it.

I hope so, but to be honest I reckon the people who will apply are similar to the type of people that got involved at Sydney.

And sifn't post this stuff up yourself. Look at the view count to the forum. :)

Nah. It's a collection of random sounds that I thought sounded cool. And it was in a time where caps in the middle of UserNames was cool. :p

Do we really need to be on a committee to argue change, when you're supposed to be the ones who are making the concerted effort to hear our views, or did I get this whole thing wrong?

Can you tell me how you will survey the students and their issues? How will you differ to the previous regime or current bureaucracies and their 'concept' on listening to the people?

We all know that the only way you can affect change is by wielding huge amounts of power! :lightsaber:

But with power comes responsibility...and political aspirations!

Course you can argue change outside of actually doing it. pwar has been part of the process to get the committee going so i was hoping that he would want to be part of the committee too.

the survey that was sent out by U@MQ last week is one way we are surveying the students. Although there is only a little about representation, it was written by students and covers many of the relevant issues for MQ.

I'd like to work with the U@MQ student committee to listen to students. Since i started in July, I have found it difficult to communicate to the 31,000 students on representation issues. Considering i have been given no training, resources or formal support, this is not surprising. Listening, i believe, is bout knowing how to actively seek ideas and views. This relies on better quality student representatives.

The current student representative system is completely volunteer driven. These people should receive the best quality skills-training. Not just to thank them for being part, but so they can actually serve the students, rather than being rubber-stamps for the University bureaucracy.

All of this is not something that will happen tomorrow. This Student Committee is not going to save the world, but it is a step towards re-activating students at MQ and creating future leaders.

peace
nik
