Hopefully I will be studying the UK next year and I will have a bit of time and hopefully a bit of money to see some of Europe and the UK.

For people that have seen a fair bit of the area (I have never been to Europe or the UK) which parts do you think are the best bits? Any great locations that are reasonably priced?

I am particularly interested in history and culture of places, as opposed to going crazy drinking lots etc. I can go crazy and drink lots in Australia but I can't do things like visit the Globe Theatre and Buckingham Palace etc. But there will be drinking involved lol.

Any recommendations?

i have been to Spain and France. I recommend Barcelona in Spain coz there is a lot to see and its not a place that typically everyone goes to.

Turkey and Greece is great for cultural places. I've only been to Turkey, but there is this place called Ephesus, and it has all columns and stadiums where the ancient olympics were held. Although I'm not sure about the prices.

All I really remember in England is Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square (apparently they don't have as many pigeons anymore, lol), and the famous red telephone boxes (I was about 5 at the time, lol).

My rather unbearable cousins and aunt went to the greek islands and here's what they had to say: "...it was just a bunch of falling down old buildings and stuff. We had to sit on a bus for two hours to get to a shopping mall..."
True story.

Vienna is an amazing city... so many museums, and its so beautiful. I recommend seeing the schoenbrunn palace in vienna. Also I went to saltzburg, and i had an unbearable urge to break into song and sing "I am 16 going on 17..."

Of course, then there's paris. Ahhhhh paris.... you could spend a month there and still not see everything u want to see. "I love paris in the spring time.... I love paris in the fall...."
Actually all of france is beautiful... the loire valley, Avignon, Arles, les Beaux de provence (although that town is kinda weird. I don't know how people live there... photo is attached). I think Cannes is slightly better then Nice, it's in better repair. However if you go to Nice, you HAVE to go around the time of carnivale. That was so much fun. Except the damn people with silly string.

Montecarlo is a slight let down. It consists of a roundabout. No seriously, the roundabout is the centre of the capital, and there are a few buildings surrounding it (mind you... those buildings are the opera house, the 2 casinos, the Hotel de paris and a shopping centre).

Paris is nice but the people are rude (mainly to english speaking countries).

BTW llamalope, those pics are nice. I love streets with cobble stones. :)

try to make it to the greek islands if you can... santorini is absolutely stunning

and if u want to make it to a lot of countries in a short amount of time try contiki or top deck tours... although i don't know how much these focus on the cultural side - u would have to look into it more i think

If you're in Switzerland, make sure you get to L'auterbrunnen, near Interlarken. Is the most beautiful little town (with an awesome campsite, if you're camping/hitchhiking/etc with the best camp-toilets in all of Europe (means a lot when you're over there for a long time without good bathrooms!!))

...it's nestled down at the bottom of this beautiful glacial valley, with huge, steep walls and waterfalls tumbling off the edge and falling all around the outskirts of the town, which are then lit up at night... Other than that, full of lots of little back streets and picturesque rolling hills and little church spires and... wow.. Beautiful little town. *sigh*

Aww so many beautiful places, so little time!!! And money.....

I wonder how many weeks of classes I will be able to cut to go travel lol....

It's nice to hear people's personal recommendations, more interesting than the travel guides. Keep em coming!

Interlaken was awesome... i went for a 5 hours walk there, it was so beautiful.

Iceland was amazing, barcelona also. And vienna is beautiful
The lesser known sardinia and corsica, italian and french islands. Sardinia was so cool, there were gum trees and wattle, similar to home and really relaxed.

London is cool, you can just walk around for ages and see so much stuff. Also get down to bath, exeter, salisbury they are beautiful old cities, stone henge of course, although i saw it every weekend pretty much so it sort of lost its magic for me.
