i read Total Film (UK) for hollywood stuff (lots of info and good writing), and Film Comment (US) for in-depth analysis.

also, Empire is crap.

i think empire's good, but i think it was a lot better when it first came down. not the stifling emphasis on blockbusters. And it's got very wanky. I've been rather disillusioned with empire since i went overseas and bought a copy of the british version - then came home a month later and found the exact same articles reprinted. Seriously, not even the tidbits are written in australia. it's ridiculous.

Empire was good about a year ago and now it's absolute rubbish, I like the start with short snippets on up and coming releases, film reviews, letters, quotes and fun stuff. But I really hate the articles which take up a lot of room and say nothing except promotional dribble (with the exception of more original articles such as on great actors etc).
But in the end it is the film magazine that I read.
Filmink is absolute dribble and I don't get why anyone would want to read it unless you really have some fetish for Australian film.

i used to write for filmink. yes, an abominable magazine.

empire is just so SAMEY. at least there's no upcoming LOTR films anymore, so 90% of the magazine space is available again.

Sight and Sound seems good from the 1 issue I've read, but a tad too expensive for me to subscribe to atm.
