Perhaps the poems themselves have their own meaning - Hughes is certainly, for the first time, telling his side of the story after remaining silent for so many years.

One thing I don't understand though - the title of a poem, and particularly a collection of poems, would not be chosen lightly.

What significance do the words "Birthday Letters" have?

I *think* (i.e, trying to remember stuff from a year ago), he wrote one poem to her each year on her birthday, or for her birthday, or the day she died, or something like that
