Over the past month, I've lost over 7 kilos and I've done little exercise, eaten more food (esp. dessert), and drunk next to zero water.

I walk to and from school every day (15 minute walk each way), but that has been the case for the past 4 years.

My diet on a normal day usually looks similar to this:

Breakfast: 2-4 weet bix, full-cream milk
Recess: Butter+Vegemite saos x 2 and a can of tuna
Lunch: 1 peanut butter sandwich
Afternoon tea: 2 minute noodles/tuna (if I feel hungry)
Dinner: Vegies, red meat, etc, breakfast juice
Dessert: Vanilla ice cream and stewed apple

My doctor said it may possibly be an over-active thyroid...Does anyone else agree? Or do you have another hypothesis?

Thank you to everyone that replies :)

Even a peanut butter sandwich is a bit of a squeeze...
Fast metabolism? Possibly...However up until last month I was actually gaining weight and I was eating less than this, with more exercise  Then I just gave up...and now this...

So...I've lost 7 kilos of muscle? lol I don't think I had that much muscle to begin with.
mind you the extra exercise was just extending the walks to 30 minutes each way
But dropping a whole dress size? From decreasing exercise and increasing food intake? I don't know.

Could be, yeah. I moved out of home 2 months ago... +ves and -'ves..
Yeah but for girls sometimes they actually put on weight from puberty and all that..
but I stopped growing 2 years ago, height-wise... I'm 164 cm tall now.

I'd get some blood work done. Its possible that it is from an overactive thyroid and the test is a simple blood test, ask your doctor to order Thyroid Function Tests (On the form it should say TFT, TSH, Free T4). There may be other causes such as stress etc.

Like you I eat a fair bit (small meals but often) and have had a few bursts of weight loss 2-3kg at a time which doesnt sound like much but given I weight like 45-46kg its a lot. I had some blood work done and consequently I have an underactive thyroid (which ironically should make me over weight) however as it is caused by autoimmune disease the doctors believe I may have short bursts of over active thyroid which makes me loss weight.

I am now on thyroid meds and my weight is a little more stable, I think I have gained a kg or two but they still havent found a direct cause yet.

Good luck, do get some tests done as I am sure you don't want to waste away

Could be a variety of things, could be hormonal

an overactive thyroid, makes alot of sense

EDIT: also I know other people who have just given up and eaten what they wanted, and then weight has come off too... this might just be happening to you, the thing is if you do not eat regularly your body can go into survival mode and store fat, now that you eat small meals often it might be burning more fat

Yeah it doesn't help that, to eat smaller meals more often is what they suggest to those trying to lose weight, however thats how I eat.

Yes I will be going for a blood test very soon.
It does really sound more and more like an over-active thyroid..

I hopped on the scales just then out of curiosity (first time since two days ago), and I'm down to 62.3 kg ... down from 63.5 two days ago

I've done nothing to change my diet/exercise routine...

This is worrying!

Loss that small is likely to be fluctuation, try weighing yourself at the same time, in the same conditions to limit this (i.e. always about the same time in the morning before breakfast).

If you think it might be overactive thyroid disease google it to see if you might have other symptoms (I am not saying this will diagnose you but it might give you a bit more of an indication) also it often runs in family and in particular if there is a history of autoimmune disease (type one diabetes, thyroid disease etc)

That is what I thought (fluctuations), but the biggest fluctuation I saw this week was + .3kg and that was after dinner.

Thanks, I will take your advice and weigh myself at the same time each morning, and keep a record of it for my doctor.
I do not know if my family has a history of this disease...I've never heard of it...

I googled it, (Thyroid Gland Disorders)
and I can agree with the following symptoms for hyperthyroidism:
  • trembling and twitches
  • increased appetite
  • weight loss (especially if eating well) ((- obviously))
  • Muscle weakness
  • fatigue, exhaustion and lack of energy
  • menstrual cycle distrubances
  • Depression and mood swings
I shall find out soon if I have it, otherwise

(Btw, if anyone is thinking what is wrong with me for complaining about losing weight; I am by no means upset about the weight loss :))) but more the rate at which it is coming off and the reasons behind it...before anyone thinks I'm crazy )

Weight fluctuation during puberty is natural, and it's also natural that there will be periods where your weight (or weight loss) makes absolutely no sense. I eat ridiculous amounts of junk (combined with healthy food) and whilst I do play organised sport it does not justify my very slight frame. In puberty, obviously your hormones are everywhere, your metabolism is fast and your body is constantly changing. Added with the stress nearly all teenagers feel, and it's no surprise that weight moves all over the place. If this becomes a regular occurence, then it obviously becomes a medical matter that I doubt many people here could lend a professional opinion to.

3kgs is quite a big jump. It's probably added weight of clothes etc. Esp during winter...

Well I weighed myself this morning, up .3 of a kg since the last "weigh - in" that I recorded here yesterday.
I ate a lot of junk today coz I went to a party so I shall be interested to see how my weight is effected in the morning tomorrow.
