Can bond breaking be summarised as removing an electron in layman's term. As in Pi bonds can be broken through the removal of an electron from it? Is it somewhat similar to this or is there more to it?

Err, removing an electron would be oxidising it lol. Bond breaking can be homolytic (one electron goes to each atom) or heterolytic (both electrons in the bond go to one atom).
