Dear Mr Donnellan,

I am replying to your email regarding student course choices.

The Board of Studies is responsible for the development of the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 and for the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examinations. Decisions as to which courses are offered in particular schools are made by the school and/or school system authorities. Course availability and timetabling within particular schools can change from year to year, depending on student numbers, demand for particular courses, and other factors.

Schools and school systems are also responsible for decisions concerning the placement of students at class levels and in courses appropriate to their individual learning needs and circumstances. Concerns about subject choice for yourself or your children would be best addressed through discussion at the school with the Year Advisor or Deputy responsible for Curriculum.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Yours sincerely

This question has come up quite a few times, so I emailed the Board last month asking for their opinion.

This came in today, with all the nice vagueness that Board letters always have. My interpretation of it is: yes, schools CAN force you to do/not do certain subjects.

Hope this clears it up.
