Idk I don't do science extension but you'd think it would have to be science related don't you?

If this is referring to the Scientific Research Report, then it can be said that it's in the name: Scientific Research Report.

To add more certainty to this, there is a student guide from NESA to the Scientific Research Report as well as the Scientific Research Portfolio. This is what NESA states with respect to the Scientific Research Report:

Choosing an area of interest
  • Choose a scientific topic or area of interest as the Report will take significant time and effort to complete.
One method to formulate a research question
  • Choose a science discipline and broad area of interest, eg Biology.

From the information above, it seems like the area of interest is merely the specific scientific area you wish to cover in your report.
