Did anyone go?? What did you think?

I am EXTREEMLY overwhelmed at the moment. I ran out of time so i had to go to the night sesion as well.

Oooo Im not sure if my future has been cleared up or if im more confused that ever!!!

Sigh... i want to go into the design side of marketing... this choice is proving to be a difficult one to stick with.

DO i do graphic arts specialising in marketing?

Do i do marketing through a commerce degree? (umm prolly not the correct terminology but u get what i mean)

The latter is supposedly more beneficial as one actually learns about consumer behavior etc... but i got so bored with business studies i had to drop it,,, im scared this will be the same.

Anyone doing either one of these courses? and at what uni!!?? What do u recommend!!!

Please i need help from an actual student... PM me

Thnx in advance

Hmm if you like the design stuff, do a design degree, you'll be doing marketing units within them anyway.

A commerce - marketing degree is tailored towards more the business management side of things, and the creation of ideas, rather than their actual designs.

Yeah sorry, i was just kinda worked up and freaking out.

Umm what didnt i like about business studies... well the fact that everyone in my class but me seemed to have this drive to come up with a brilliant idea and become filthy rich... money just isnt that important to me. Then there were people in my class who were allready undertaking little schemes (murf!!), and i was just so intimidated and i felt so out of place I guess i just didnt feel that business savy and that id ever really want to compete with these kind of people... we were in very different places looking to get very different things out of the course. I just wanted information about the business world, they wanted .. well more that that.

In the future i guss im looking to do something like.. hmm does anyone watch the apprentice??? Well Kendra's job of like designing advertisment brochures etc would be great. Or remember the muso guy who wore the cool suits?? Well his job was he put out promotional campains for large companies, he would decide what image they wanted and put it out for the public to see.

Ok, now that ive calmed down you should have a clearer understanding... heh

Cheers.

From that I would say you are not suited for a commerce or business degree. You need motivation and drive, you will have a lot of competitive classmates and you will have to be able to immerse yourself in theory of why things tick and be able to apply them to different scenarios. People there will have a lot more zany schemes under way and if you are intimidated by what others want out of a course then you will have issues with it. While it gives you a lot of information most unis will want you to actively apply that new knowledge to different cases so you need to think like a businessperson not just a hobbyist. The purpose of the degree is to get you thinking and able to apply that knowledge so when you graduate you can do it for real outside of the incubator where your every decision will result not in a mark but in a paycheque. It just doesn't seem like you like the application bit, but without it a lot of the knowledge will be useless.

You only compete with yourself in education, to think any different means you have already lost. Don't let other peoples motives get in your way of doing what you enjoy. It just seems to me that you aren't very interested in the whole business aspect of business but take a more general/passing interest in it. If this is the case save yourself money and years of grief, just go buy some business books and read them and enjoy the arts/design side of things.

Marketing is all about screwing people over, I should know, I majored in it :D
If you only like designing then forget the whole marketing and advertising angle. Become a designer only and specialise in that. Be a creative person not a scheming one and focus on the quality of designs etc and not the reasoning why the disclaimers must be hard to read and why having a certain age group on the label is good or bad. Let someone else tell you what they want and you create it. Leave the reasoning to those people who enjoy it and immerse themselves in it. Those who work at things they do not enjoy are usually doing a disrevice to themselves.

But who knows, you might change your mind and go through a sudden phase in your life where you enjoy the whole getting ideas and putting schemes together thing and then I would say go with the marketing/commece as it will give you a good grounding.

I am double majoring in marketing.
Ok, last year I wanted to do anything that isn't business...or maths. I, like you, am not aroused by the concept of money. However, marketing isn't just about making money. If you think of it this way then you will only learn how to screw people over.
However, if you think of marketing as a wide discipline through which you can create ideas from seeminly nothing that people will like and then bring those ideas into an advertising concept, then you will enjoy mktg.
