Is this routinely done at UoW or does this look like a hoax?

WARNING - your University User Account password for "ct499" is
about to expire.

Your password will expire in 37 days.

If you do not change your password before that time
you will be unable to access your email, connect to
external (non-UOW) websites or connect to machines
requiring your logon.

You can change your password before it expires by visiting:
http://www.uow.edu.au/its/services/manage-mail/

To enable you to personally change your password if it has
been forgotten or expired we encourage all users to set up
some questions and answers in the Password Reset Challenge
interface. You can set up your own secrets by selecting the
Maintain Password Reset Challenges link from the Manage
User Account web page shown above.

Please direct enquiries relating to user account passwords
to ITS Student Computer Resources Centre on level 1 of
Building 17 or email its@uow.edu.au

It's routine, I think I've been forced by that to change mine two or three times so far.

It's also amazingly fussy about what it will and will not accept as a password :)
"No, this is based on your previous password"
"No, this is based on your birthday combined with address"
"No, this is based on a dictionary word"
"No, this is a combination of your user name with date of birth"
"No, this does not include at least two of the three character types (digits, letters, symbols"

It caused me an immense amount of trouble. Then to make matters worse, in frustration I entered 'qwerty' and the stupid thing accepted it! Then I had to front up to ITS and say that I had accidentally set a ridiculous password and ask if it could be reset ;)

The moral to this story is: Don't enter stupid passwords assuming that it will not accept them! :)

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass changing passwords. Think we pretty much have to do it once a session. I remember the first time I changed it, I was sitting there for like 5 mins because it wouldn't accept them (for the reasons stated in the above post).

Do the smart thing, use 2 passwords, and just go from one to the other and back again :)

Hahaha I remember these messages! Except I was 12, it was Dad's account and we were using telnet.

Yeah, its routine... but you can have 2 passwords and alternate between them everytime your password needs to be changed, it makes things much simpler.

Although one semester I was severely fustrated with the password system and I typed in 'itscanblowme' and it accepted it.... I wasn't game to go to ITS and try and get it changed.

Very glad to hear I'm not the only person who had experienced difficulty/frustration with it, and did something 'clever' as a result. I thought I must have just been a clown or something :)

can't you change the password any time with the "passwd" command in unix?
