Clueless/Emma: Essay Question - Please Help (1 Viewer)

Hi. I'm studying Emma/Clueless (transformations) and I was wondering about an essay question I just got. It's the 2003 HSC question: "How has your perception of transformations been illuminated by your comparative study of Emma and Clueless?"

I am unsure as to what exactly I am meant to be saying. I understand the two texts and the changes between them and how context affects it etc but I don't understand how to answer the question. What sort of things should I be discussing. Ie. Should I be talking about how the contexts changes values or themes in the texts?

Would someone mind please just explaining what types of things I should be discussing? I would really appreciate it and I'm sorry if this is just a dense question.

There's two parts

a) Clueless (date) adapted/transformed from the classic novel by Jane Austen 'Emma' (date), (is it good is it bad?)
b) story is adapted to fit in the social context
c) yet the story contain themes that transcend the setting to provide lessons we can still learn from today
d) this is evident when considering *insert theme*, character depth, social context/social critique


AND VOLIA you have a introduction


Yes the important part is that every single freaking thing in this world has been adapted from something else, the only thing that varies is the social context, which can change a whole lot. HOWEVER
a) most themes from year 12 selected texts are still VERY RELEVANT, in fact ALWAYS RELEVANT
b)human nature will never change ie characters won't
c) the important thing is that by changing the setting modernising themes it makes it more accessible to the current audience.

Ie most people watch bridget jones' diary for entertainment while pride and prejudice is a bit different.

oh and chuck in a paragraph about language or medium, teachers always like that.

You're lucky though, I'm doing the same unit but my final essay is 'the hunchback of notre dame' original vs. disney version, the original is.... should be renamed 'how to use esmerelda that stupid naive girl'

Thankyou muchly. I get it now; I just don't understand how the teacher expected all that in 1000 words. My problem is writing too much. I hate cutting stuff out but last night when I did it I had to-I had 8000 words:( Hunchback of Notre Dame? Interesting. I'm much happier as I get to study Emma which is cool as I do like Jane Austen's work (I know, I know) and find Clueless clever and amusing. Thanks again.
