Re: combine commerse &science..

i dont think you'll be getting into either considering you can't spell the course title correctly

Agree with gracie.
If you like commerce so much, try KFC.

Past the spelling (which I do heartedly admit needs to be spelt correctly, especially if you're gonna do the course), depends what you want out of your degrees. Don't let an extra year scare you--it's better than doing two degrees successively and spending at least 6 years in uni. USYD is good for science research, and for Commerce...well, not sure about that one. USYD and UNSW both have different strengths in commerce, so you'd have to check that out.

We have enough of those, don't you want people who will actually improve the level of spelling at UNSW? :p

Hahaha true story now
Last year accounting 1b assessment worth 10% written task
Average: 4/10
Reason: 6 Marks were for your spelling and grammar, 4 for your ideas.
Anyway I was double the average.

Seriously now, one good thing about UNSW is that in commerce there is an option for actuary studies, I figure if you are doing that combination UNSW would be the go.

Don't they need the international students to pass though?

And just to post something relevant to the original poster, tell us what majors you want to specifically do.

man thats the biggest myth ever

international students would be some of the hardest working people at uni...and they probably help eachother as well, study in groups --> they are heaps more savvy when it comes to getting marks

i know some international students and their marks are crazy! they work so hard, good on them, i work hard im sure others do...but not like that

Most of the international students you'll find are actually very intelligent people (otherwise how did they get here?) but it's just their English that's lacking. And that's big for more essay-orientated degrees like Commerce. It's not too bad for Science--fail a report here and there, but you've got the concepts there.

well yes lots of international students have parents with too much money and no idea. but the actually smart international kids are nuts - these kids can pick up stuff i cant even comprehend (well thats not too hard i guess...but still...).

anyway, correct me if im wrong but com/sci at unsw is 4 yrs double major and com/sci at usyd is 5 yrs with up to four majors.

well in my opinion, five years is too long for com/sci. all you need is a commerce major with a complementary science major (the other way around doesnt really work). science majors like chem, phys, geology dont really go with any commerce majors, and for usyd in particular, majors like peco and govt dont really go with any science majors.

Are there any other good combinations with finance other than mathematics/actuarial in a combined comm sci?

well actuary is a commerce major so actuary and finance double major can only be completed in bcom, bcom/ba, bcom(lib), bcom(int) or bcom/bec. i think the best combos are actl or fins or econ with math or stat. they are good complementary majors that can help you with employment prospects.

on the fce site, they suggest combos like management or marketing with psyc, marketing with biotech or nutrition just to name a few. a really stupid combo would be econmetrics with statistics (same things).

Actuarial is basically an applied stats degree, so they're better off specialising in something else like Applied/Pure Math.

well it depends...if you like stats, do actuary or econometrics. i like differential equations better, so im going to do applied maths.
