Hmm, actually you may be abit mixed up with the usage of contrasting & comparing.

Contrasting involvlves both finding only differences, comparing involves both differences & similarities. However, this terminology is often used in questions, though using them as your techniques in essays are alright, just so long as you state, the effect of this technique. i.e. Through the sharp contrasting views of their journeys brought upon by Skrzynecki & Lee, an effective and new understanding of this and that arises....etc,etc.

Though simile itself is a technique, there isn't much of a need to state the use of 2 techniques in a single quote/paragraph in an essay.

I like to look at contrast in artistic terms.
If a black and white photograph has lots of contrast, it is more black and white, but a less contrasting photo has more areas of grey.
So, contrast is sort of like HOW different are the things you are talking about, is it like comparing black and white? or do they have more shades or grey? ( in none artsy fatsy terms, are they really different or just a little) How do they show different opinions?

Compare, thats more analytical, what are the differences and what do they signify? WHY are they different? What do these differences mean? What do any similarities mean?

I hope this helps.
