$\noindent Try using properties of conjugation to help show that $w\overline{w} = 1$ (noting $z\bar{z} = 1$).$

$\noindent (The result won't generally hold if $a$ and $b$ are allowed to be non-real. It will though if $a$ and $b$ are real (and not both $0$ of course).)$

Another idea is to use de moivre's theorem.

$\textrm{if} z = cos\theta + i sin\theta , z^{-1} = cos\theta - i sin\theta$
