What should be in there is, apart from drafts (which have to be extensively annotated btw, to show what you did and what you like, how came up with etc...) but also a diary in which one would have written thoughts, scribblings of ideas, and well, a journal of what day and an entry for each time you think or work on your composition, even if it was just a minor change.

Also list names of composers and works who have influenced some of your material/why it has. Also why you've written it, what kind of purpose etc.

If you suddenly have a brainwave and write it down on a scrap of paper, shove those scraps of paper in the portfolio too. I just have a folder and it's all in there, and used a A4 ex. book for the diary, so stuff is all together.

I feel like there should be more. Hope it is something to help though. :D

yeah just write about everything
its meant to show all the processes of ur comp. Its a good idea to put in some researched info to show that you have understanding of the style of ur piece, the performing media, composers that influenced you, etc. As long as it shows how your composition developed it should be cool. Also do some experiments and put that in there like exploring different tone colour effects on an instrument.

and apparently, you shouldn't type it up nicely and neatly afterwards...but it has to be legible.

hey don't knock tuzza high!! (i'm from there)

mr. harwood is my music teacher.

look, in all honesty, i go there and i haven't touched the thing (in terms of filling it out) and they don't really expect me to. What is is though, is for people who are completley lost, the stuff in the front is very useful. the checklists and things are useful too, particularly for going over things.

the other girl in my class uses hers like the bible. its up to you but i wouldn't disregard the composition portfolio completley. it has its uses.

good luck!!

in the syllabus theres a guide on what you need in your portfolio.. its a little diff for 3u than 2u
It also says for works that inspired you or such, you can do a conceptual analysis of them (it does help, and is a damn gd way to fill up a few pages :D )

Meanwhile i only just changed to 3u composition, have just started my 1st comp, and my non-existent portfolio is due tomorrow.. a fun night this'll be..

Anyhow, don't stress about the comps, therell be a lot of people worse off than you (e.g starting this week like me hehe). I did my 2u comp last year less than a month before the due date and still managed to get a nom. for encore.. so theres still hope!

ok, everyone's pretty much said it. i did music1 last year and my composition portfolio had hardly anything in it.... all my drafts, some notes on encore, some pieces of music that i listened to and inspired me, some ideas for a melody, a review on an excursion to the con where we workshopped with a composer, all my notes on why i didn't like this, why id idn't like that etc etc....

talk to your teacher about it, my teacher gave us lots of help and showed us diaries from past years etc. besides, the board only request to see your diary IF they find something dodgy with your composition.
